Funding Thanksgiving is easier with free turkey from these grocery stores.
Thanksgiving will mean a lot more this year as Americans have spent nine months battling COVID-19, state-wide closures, and record unemployment. Throwing the perfect Thanksgiving is challenging under normal circumstances, but budgets are even tighter for many Americans who lost their jobs due to the pandemic. The current U.S. unemployment rate is 7.9%, meaning many Americans will be experiencing a different financial situation this holiday season.
How much does a Thanksgiving meal cost in 2020?
Turkey costs about $1.30 per pound, which means a 16-pound turkey comes in at $20.80, according to the American Farm Bureau Federations’ annual survey. The average cost of a Thanksgiving meal for 10 is $48.91, according to the survey. If that sounds like less than you typically spend, that’s because the shopping list for the American Farm Bureau Federations doesn’t include many popular side dishes, multiple desserts, alcohol or soda. The list does include:
- Sweet potatoes
- Rolls with butter
- A veggie trey
- Pumpkin pie with whipped cream
Luckily, there is an additional way to save on your Thanksgiving meal this year. Some grocery stores are giving away free turkeys.
How can I get a free turkey in 2020?
Grocery stores throughout the country will be giving out free turkeys this year with purchase. Learn how you can score a free bird for the holiday.
You can earn points on trips to the grocery store from now until November 26th with your Price Plus club card. It’s free to join. Once you spend the minimum amount (it varies from store to store), give your Price Plus club card to the cashier to receive a free turkey, ham, turkey breast, lasagna, kosher chicken or tofurky. You can cash in your free item any day up to Thanksgiving Day. If opting for the turkey, make sure to pick it up in advance, because it will be frozen. This is a great offer, even if you aren’t hosting Thanksgiving this year.
If you are a club card member, you can expect a free turkey with a $150 purchase from November 1st through Thanksgiving. While it doesn’t make sense to spend $150 for a $20 turkey, the offer is a good one if you are feeding a large group and typically spend that amount.
Members of the Weis rewards program can build points to get a free turkey. Shoppers earn one point for every dollar they spend. A free turkey, ham or lasagna requires 400 points. You can earn 400 points from purchases made between November 5th and November 26th.
To earn a free turkey certificate, you will need to earn 400 Giant Choice Reward points by Thanksgiving. Your certificate can be redeemed in-store from November 13th through November 26th.
While other grocery stores haven’t announced free turkey offers yet, many stores have had similar offerings in 2019. Those stores included:
- BJ’s Wholesale Club
Check with your local grocery stores to see if they have any Thanksgiving promotions going on to help you save.
